They swept over the Tarro railway bridge and caught sight of the muddy river in the moonlight at Hexham and knew they would be home soon or, at least Ingrid would be at home and Angela would have another night on the spare bed before repeating the drive to Allynsdale the next day.

‘You’ve not said a word since we left Wallisville’ Ingrid said, more as an observation than anything else.

‘I was thinking of the mega crack-up’ Angela said, using the name they both used for Angela’s mental collapse nearly thirty years earlier.

‘Well you never did things by halves’ Ingrid said and patted Angela’s leg.

‘It’s funny, but the next ten years after the mega crack up now seemed like they were a lost ten years until I started to work seriously on Mick and my doctorate, and then I had a good twenty years with some ups and downs and even losing my job wasn’t so bad because I could buy the cottage, but now I’m scared that I might be lost again and this time there might not be a way back.’

‘There’s always a way back’ Ingrid said. ‘You’ve done it before, reinvented yourself and you’ll do it again.’

‘What if I’ve run out of Me’s to reinvent?’

‘Oh, I think there’s plenty of Angela MacGregor’s in that head of yours waiting to burst out and take on the world.’

‘God! You make me sound like Sybil. I might be a bit loopy but I’m not completely insane.’ Angela said to Ingrid as they kept following the river towards the sea.

‘You know what we should do?’ Ingrid asked, and went on before Angela could reply, ‘Go out tonight like we used to in the old days’

‘What?’ Angela asked, ‘A couple of cougars hitting the town?’

‘I didn’t mean trying to hook up, I’m over that crap’ Ingrid replied, and Angela turned to gaze at her for a while.

She had never told Ingrid the reason for the ‘mega crack-up’ because she wasn’t always sure of the reasons herself, and it was easier to fall back on what her parents thought the reasons were and that was burning the candle at both ends, trying to complete her thesis, do part time teaching at uni and private tutoring for kids doing the HSC and partying too hard with her friends. The reason she suspected, and then discounted as being silly, was she believed that somehow Siobhan had entered her soul and that she was being tasked with the almost impossible job of rescuing Siobhan from the twisted vision of Molly that was held by Plunket and Quigley, that was all that existed in the world of Siobhan because there was hardly any record of who she had been, or where she came from, or if she had family. With a name like that she was obviously Irish or of Irish extraction but apart from that there was nothing. The newspaper reports of her incarceration and suicide didn’t mention her by name
